YOUTH VOLUNTEER COUNSELOR GUIDELINES

                     

     

 

Volunteering as a youth Counselor at the Chinmaya Mission Summer Camp is a fun and rewarding experience involving a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities. The general camp day is from 8am-5pm, (or 8:45am – 6pm) 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. Volunteers are first and foremost expected to be role models for the younger children, exemplifying respect to elders, duty, and self-control. While there is opportunity to socialize with other volunteers, the primary job of the volunteers is to look out for the children under their care, help the schedule flow as smoothly as possible, while fostering a fun and caring environment for the campers.

Some required qualifications and conditions:

1. Ability to act as a good role model for all the Camp children.
2. Once the dates have been committed and accepted, they should be honored.
3. Be punctual.
4. Need to dress appropriately to set an example for children.
5. Need to wear the volunteer uniform, which will be provided.
6. Serve other children before serving oneself.
7. Follow the instructions from teachers and other senior volunteers.
8. No outside private calls and internet use is allowed.
9. Ability to accept challenges.
10. Be people friendly and helpful.
11. Organization skills.
12. Leadership qualities.
13. Duties include:
* Class assistant - help a class for the whole day.
* Act as counselor and mentor for students whenever required.
* Solve disputes between children, to the extent you can handle.
* Responsible for the safety of the children group allotted to you throughout the day.
* Supervise children during lunch time and get them to clean the area after lunch.
* Serve snack to children.
* Help organize games and sports for children.
* Maintain cleanliness, including cleanup after snacks, main hall & office tidiness, emptying garbage, etc.
* Watering the garden, weeding, and litter pickup.
* Solve disputes between children, to the extent you can handle.
* Telephone coverage.
* Front desk coverage.
* Promote a fun, positive, and inspiring camp experience for all!
14. Preference is given to those applicants who can commit for the full 4 weeks.
15. Failure to comply with instructions will lead to dismissal.
16. Attendance at orientation sessions is compulsory.
17. Applications will be considered on a first come first served basis. Apply early for better chances, as there are a limited number of openings and all others will be waitlisted. Decision of the Mission is final.
18. The closing date for accepting Youth Volunteer applications is February 6th, 2012.
